YouTube vs Vimeo for Courses Comparing Video Hosts 2020

See why Vimeo is a better option than YouTube for your Online Courses and other Exclusive Videos you offer your Members.

In order to monetize your Premium Content, you need to place your videos privately behind a membership program where your audience and students need to pay to access. You can't do that with YouTube.

The video goes through the pros and cons of both video platforms.

YouTube

YouTube is a free video sharing website that is extremely popular and based on advertising.

Pros

  • It is FREE
  • Second only to Google in the internet for most traffic and searches. Gives you the potential for your content to go viral.
  • A truly social media platform where you can engage with your audience
  • Video player is compatible with most browsers, systems and screen sizes

Cons

  • Not a professional solution for serious online course creators
  • Not a professional solution for showing exclusive videos in a paid or membership website
  • May show ads
  • Will recommend video links that lead outside your course and to potential competitors

Vimeo

Join the world's leading professional video platform and grow your business with easy-to-use, high-quality video creation, hosting, and marketing tools.

Pros

  • Most affordable video platform that doesn't rely on ads. Upgrade plan starts at $7/month.
  • Predictable pricing plan based on storage used with unlimited bandwidth
  • Domain locking embedding. Means videos cannot be shared or downloaded.
  • Easy to use
  • Video player is compatible with most browsers, systems and screen sizes

Cons

  • Lacks some of the customization options of pricier video hosts
  • No HLS encryption for high level anti-piracy

And the Winner is ... Vimeo

Conclusion:

For the purpose of this study, in which we are searching for the best video hosting platform for our online courses, Vimeo meets more of our needs than YouTube. YouTube is a great platform to create a channel for yourself and even do tutorials. If you are just starting out and have very little budget at all, then you can certainly opt to use YouTube as a video platform for your courses. YouTube will help you build an audience with zero or little marketing budget.

But if you are or want to be perceived as a professional online course instructor or content expert, then Vimeo provides a better solution for you. Your Vimeo videos will not have advertising, and will not show your students links to videos outside your course or website.

Vimeo has the much needed domain-level privacy, which means you can rest assured your video courses can only be viewed from your website and cannot be shared.
